Louisville Criterium

(April 5, 2014) Today was the first race of my 2014 road season, the Louisville Criterium. I had a fever last night, and did not feel great today either, but I guess that I am not too sick because I was able to finish mid-pack. I woke up very late, at noon, after staying up late last night and feeling sick. This was not a good idea and I woke up feeling weak and hungry. I decided on trying to race anyways, and that was a good decision.

After waking up late, I did not get to the race with as much time before my race as I had wanted. I warmed up for maybe 15 minutes, but probably less. As always in the Senior Men 3's, we started hard. However, all of the team who was racing was there in the peleton, and riding pretty strong. At times, I was struggling hard to stay in, especially after temporarily being shot out the back after being forced to slam on the brakes to avoid crashing. I was in good position before this incident, but afterwards, it took a long time and a lot of effort to move back up and avoid a field split. Robert took a flyer off the front at one point and Stuart worked a lot on the front to close down gaps and both ended up a lap down but rejoined the group and sat in after being lapped. Many times during the race, I thought of dropping out with the excuse of being sick, but I kept battling and ended up finishing in the middle of the peloton, very tired, but content for the first race of the season.

In review, this race was not conducted very well by the team, although we all finished and stuck in. We did not group up at all and use our numbers to our advantage. A 6-man team should be able to deal damage as a team, but we did not do this. Congratulations to ex-BJC riders Ian McPherson, and Maxx "Double X" Chance for taking 1st and 3rd respectively in a 3-man breakaway. Steven finished 4th in the group sprint, 7th overall, Davis took 15th overall, I took 20th, Jeremy 26th, Stuart 39th, and Robert 41st. It was not the best race we could have put together, but it was alright for the first race.
