(June 13, 2014) I have been very busy lately, and have not had time to blog really at all. The last 4 weeks have been eventful, and I am pleased with my fitness. About 4 weeks ago was the Superior Morgul Classic Road Race. I was feeling pretty good at the start and decided to jump on an acceleration on the first time up the famed climb 'The Wall.' This may not have been the smartest idea, but it served as a pretty good test for my legs, and we were caught before the next descent. I was fairly active during the first two laps, before I decided to sit in the group for a while until I had a good place to make a move. On the third time up The Wall, my legs felt pretty good until the top when they started to cramp up just a little bit. I should have realized that I needed to eat, but I did not feel like eating and I just drank more water. Then, on the next lap and the penultimate ascent up The Wall, I cramped up a little more, but was able to stay in the group fairly comfortably and again decided not to eat. Aside from the cramping, my legs were feeling great. Racing continued and I stayed in the pack for the last lap, but on the final time up The Wall, my legs cramped up and I could hardly keep the pedals moving, and ended up last of the bunch, struggling to make it across the finish line.

Although I did not have a good finish to my race, this was a confidence booster and a good learning lesson. In a 2+ hour race, you simply cannot perform at a high level without replenishing electrolytes. I have learned my lesson on eating while racing, and hopefully I will not make this mistake again. I felt strong throughout the race when I was not cramping, and I was being active, so I became confident with my fitness.
